Katie Holmes abandoned her customary glamorous look and appeared gaunt and thin as she spent a day out with her family on a private Brazilian island.

The actress was clad in a fashionable asymmetrical swimsuit, but the cut of the costume only served to highlight her stick-thin figure and her unsupported bust.

She also ditched her towering heels in favour of flip flops and her usual perfectly coiffed hair was hidden under a headscarf, making her look almost unrecognisable.

Katie and Tom were spotted yesterday enjoying a day out with daughter Suri in Angra Dos Reis, a private island owned by famous Brazilian plastic surgeon Ivo Pitanguy.

It is a tropical island hotspot which is just an hour's flight from Rio de Janeiro where the family are staying.

The couple are in Brazil as part of Cruise's worldwide promotional tour for the film Valkyrie which opens in there tomorrow.

During their day out on the exclusive island they were all treated to an outdoor lunch and given a tour after arriving by helicopter.

Katie has recently looked tired and thin as her Broadway stint in the play All my Sons appeared to take its toll.

But she looked much healthier - and happier - as she left the Copacabane Palace Hotel in a cornflower sundress matched with designer shoes on Sunday.

She took off the dress and replaced the shoes with flip flops once she had reached the sand.

Suri lived up to her reputation as one of Hollywood's most stylish under-fives, in a series of dresses with smock detailing, and later she drew a crowd of young friends.

Local children swarmed to play with the tot and help her collect sea shells.

Her playmates were the children of military staff, as the Cruise family had chosen to hit the beach within the residential area of a Brazilian military base, presumably for security reasons.

Although the outing appeared relaxed, the family visited the beach amid heavy security after leaving their smart hotel in a four-car convoy.

At 5ft 9in, the latest Mrs Cruise, 29, is almost two inches taller than her husband - without any vertical assistance.

Meanwhile, Tom has been noted for his recent low-key garb.

The star appeared to have taken a capsule wardrobe on his trip as he toured Europe to promote his film.

The film star constantly recycled a combination of skin-tight knitted top with three-quarter length sleeves and black trousers, and a beach outfit of blue shorts and short sleeved shirt.

Hollywood favourites Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston secured first and second place respectively, but at just 2-and-a-half years old, the littlest Cruise has joined their ranks.

The publication notes that Suri outperforms even her A-list parents Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes on newsstands in America.

Suri outshone fellow Hollywood toddler Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, who came in eight position after ranking well for 'likability'.

Forbes collated the annual list after analysing cover sales for America's biggest celebrity weeklies -People, Star, US Weekly, In Touch Weekly, Life & Style and OK!.

Heath Ledger was named third on the list after his tragic death made him front-cover news.

Young mothers Jamie Lynne Spears and Nicole Ritchie were next, while blonde bombshell Jessica Simpson came in at number six.

In Touch Editor Michelle Lee, who revealed newsstand accounts for more than 95 per cent of of the magazine's sales, explains: 'You have basically five seconds, maybe less, to grab a reader at the newsstand.

'So they either have to love that star or they have to be fascinated by their story that week.'

But fatigue can set in - despite fronting more than 30 covers this year, Britney Spears failed to make the list.

The two-year-old waved around her artwork as the proud actress carried her into their car.

The Cruise women have been living in New York whilst Katie treads the boards on Broadway.

Husband Tom has been a frequent visitor to the city as Katie helps make her new play, All My Sons, New York's hottest ticket with the first full week bringing in $684,000.

Meanwhile Tom’s former wife Nicole Kidman says she is pleased that he has found happiness again.

The actress - who has a daughter, Sunday Rose, with husband Keith Urban - divorced the movie star in 2001 after 11 years of marriage.

Nicole admits that she’s relieved that they’ve both now found their true soulmates.

‘I didn't foresee it, that you can meet somebody who you have a deep and more profound love with,’ she says.

You move into a stage where you're able to be a more fuller person in your relationship.’

However the 41-year-old says she doesn't regret her marriage to the actor, with whom she had adopted children Isabella, 15, and Connor, 13.

‘I want to be really careful with that because I don't want to take away from 11 years with that man that were really important,’ she tells Elle magazine.

‘Really, for our kids - they were amidst a lot of love. It wasn't bad. And now we're amidst a more evolved love.’

So on Saturday, Tom and Suri were out and about while Holmes performed in her Broadway play All My Sons.

Dad and daughter later joined Cruise's other children from his marriage with Nicole Kidman - Isabella, 15, and Connor, 13 - where they ate dinner together at a seafood restaurant.

Then on Sunday morning it was time for brunch and it was Holmes's turn for some family time.

She and Suri, Isabella and Connor joined her parents Martin and Kathleen and Tom's mother Mary Lee for some brunch at Alice's Tea Cup.

But this time there was no sign of Tom.

After brunch, it was back to work for Holmes, who is starring in a Broadway play

But there was no time to hang around. After leaving the restaurant, Holmes headed to Broadway to perform again.

It wasn't until Sunday evening that she and Tom managed to find some precious time alone where they went to New York's West Village to eat at an Italian restaurant.

The couple looked happy as they walked along hand in hand and Cruise even had the opportunity to play hero when he gallantly helped a photographer who had fallen over.

The Hollywood star graciously picked up the photographer's keys and got him back on his feet.

Suri Cruise may be only two years old but it seems the toddler has already developed a dislike for photographers.

The cute brunette pulled a cheeky face at the waiting paparazzi - to the amusement of mother Katie Holmes - as the pair enjoyed another New York outing together.

The Cruise women were visiting a clothing store in Manhattan.

They have been living in the city as Katie prepares for her first appearance on Broadway in a production of All My Sons, which opens in October.

The 29-year-old has thrown herself back into her acting career after taking time out to raise Suri.

She recently wrapped filming a guest appearance as a non-profit attorney in an episode of US television drama Eli Stone.

As Katie continues rehearsals, her 46-year-old husband Tom has had a lot of business to deal with in Hollywood.

Earlier this week, his long-term producing partner Paula Wagner announced she was stepping down from her post as chief executive of his United Artists studio.

Tom had some good news though as he secured a Christmas release date for his controversial World War II film Valkyrie, which, at one point, had been delayed until 2009.
