Zeta-Jones is no stranger to musicals, having starred in the West End production of 42nd Street in the late Eighties and securing an Oscar for her portrayal of murderess Velma Kelly in the 2002 big screen adaptation of Chicago.
She has also played a famous female leader before, Catherine The Great, in a 1995 TV movie.
The new movie, entitled Cleo, will feature a soundtrack by punk band Guided By Voices.
Cleopatra's life was famously brought to cinemas in 1963 with Dame Elizabeth Taylor playing the tragic queen opposite Richard Burton as Marc Antony.
